What even is a canvas?

Fall has me musing about many things. It's that type of season for me. I recently got selected to do a mural on a stairwell in Nelson BC, at Touchstones, a local art gallery. They offered me this well lit wall to paint upon. I've created a nice design and am eager to get started. It also got me thinking about canvases. Yes, many painters use rectangular canvases to paint on. Many painters also paint on everything and anything. So it got me thinking, really thinking, about the idea of a canvas.

I don't think the canvas is the thing painted upon but instead it's the idea that you've found a place to hold your imaginings. It's a container for sharing a vision that you can't explain with words. It's a place of worship for the imagination. You can actually enter the world the artist envisions through their canvas! So, it's not just what we chose to create on, it's the beautiful idea of the canvas. And it's a real gift of sharing.

I like the fall musings

Stay well
